Nottingham Forest walked out of the City Ground with a 1-0 lead and the slimmest possible advantage to take into Villa Park. The first leg was a tactical, low-block job that Nuno Espirito Santo set up to perfection. The problem for Forest is that 1-0 over Aston Villa, on a European night at Villa Park, with Unai Emery in the dugout, is not the lead they think it is.

Kickoff: Thursday 7 May 2026, 21:00 CET (20:00 BST, 21:00 WAT) at Villa Park, Birmingham

Villa got 90 minutes of frustration in the East Midlands. Chris Wood prodded in from a Morgan Gibbs-White set piece in the 31st minute and Forest spent the next hour with eleven men behind the ball. Villa had the bigger share of possession, the higher xG, and three shots cleared off the line. The away goal that does not count for tiebreakers any more would have changed the conversation. The tie is still very much alive.

This is where Emery comes in. The Spaniard has won three Europa Leagues and reached a fourth final. He has lost just one of his last 12 European home matches in charge of Villa and scored two or more goals in eight of those nights. Villa Park under the lights, with the Holte End in full voice, is the kind of European theatre Forest have not played in for forty years. Stake have Villa to qualify at 1.55, which makes complete sense given the venue, the manager and the form.

Forest have a problem on the road. They have lost five of their last seven away knockout legs in European competition and failed to score in three of their last four away games at top-six Premier League sides this season. Nuno will set up to defend again. He will sit Wood up the pitch alone and ask Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi to break on the counter. The issue is that Villa create too much at home for that approach to hold for 90 minutes. Six of Villa's last seven home European matches have produced Over 2.5 goals.

Ollie Watkins is the man. The England forward has scored in five of his last seven home European matches for Villa and is on a run of four goals in his last five outings against Forest in all competitions. With Marcus Rashford providing width and Morgan Rogers floating between the lines, Villa have the variety in the final third to break Forest down. Take Aston Villa to qualify and Over 2.5 goals. Ollie Watkins anytime scorer and Morgan Rogers 2+ shots on target are the top player props.

More to know

  • Unai Emery has reached three Europa League finals as a manager and won three of them. The current Villa side has scored at least two goals in five of their last six Europa knockout home legs.
  • Stake price Aston Villa to qualify at 1.55. Over 2.5 goals at Villa Park is at 1.85. Ollie Watkins anytime scorer is at 1.95.

Verdict

Villa Park is the venue, Emery is the manager, and Forest have not won an away knockout leg in Europe at this level in a generation. The 1-0 deficit looks bigger on paper than it is in reality. Villa break it open before the hour mark and march into the final.
