Why direct card payments fail, which Nigerian banks block hardest, and the six funding paths that get the deposit through.

Your card declined at checkout. Your bank app showed "transaction failed." Or worse, the deposit went through, the bookmaker did not credit it, and the bank refuses to reverse. This page maps the six funding paths Nigerian banks actually allow in 2026 and which paths each major bank flags hardest.
Why your bank flagged the transaction
Nigerian banks classify gambling-related merchant codes (MCC 7995) as high-risk. CBN circulars in 2023 and 2024 nudged banks to throttle direct card payments to gambling merchants. In 2025 most retail banks added rules that block, delay, or require step-up verification on these transactions. The block does not always trigger consistently. The same card can work on Tuesday and fail on Wednesday.

Bank by bank
- GTBank: Direct card to most bookmakers fails 60% of the time. Use OPay or USSD.
- Access Bank: Direct card works for SportyBet and Bet9ja, fails on offshore books. Use Paystack bank transfer for offshore.
- UBA: Tightest controls. Direct card almost never works. PalmPay or USDT only.
- First Bank: Card works inconsistently. USSD via *894# works reliably.
- Zenith Bank: Card payments to international gambling MCC are blocked entirely. Use OPay or crypto.
- Wema (ALAT): Most permissive. Direct card works on most bookmakers, including offshore.
- Stanbic IBTC: Card works on local books, fails on offshore. Use Paystack for both.
- Kuda: Soft block on direct card to gambling merchants. Bank transfer via Paystack works.
The fix-it sequence when a deposit fails
- Wait 10 minutes. If the bank holds and reverses, the funds appear on the bank statement as a reversal.
- Check the bookmaker deposit history. Sometimes the deposit lands two to five minutes late.
- If the bank statement shows a successful debit but the bookmaker shows nothing, contact the bookmaker first with the bank statement screenshot.
- If the bookmaker shows nothing after 24 hours, raise a dispute with your bank with the transaction reference. Keep the bookmaker correspondence as evidence.
